Focus on the Florida
James Dobson and Focus on the Family are officially focusing on the Florida constitutional amendment for marriage drive (it hasn't gotten much visibility nationwide up to now.) Here's the email Dobson is sending out:
Protect Marriage in Florida: Sign the Petition Today

Dear Friends in Florida,

Florida is moving toward amending the state constitution to protect traditional marriage. The Florida Family Policy Council is leading a coalition of individuals and organizations working to see that this happens. The coalition – Florida4Marriage.org – is in the process of gathering the valid signatures needed to place the amendment on the ballot in November 2006.

The only way to protect marriage from redefinition by rogue judges such as those who legalized same-sex marriage in Massachusetts is to enshrine marriage in the state constitution. This means that marriage would be defined in the Florida Constitution as the union of one man and one woman only.

Every time citizens of a state have been given the opportunity to protect traditional marriage in their state constitutions, voters have overwhelmingly defined marriage as between one man and one woman only. Floridians deserve the opportunity voters in 19 states have had.

If you have not already signed a petition, please go to www.Florida4Marriage.org and download the petition and circulating instructions. It is very important that you follow the instructions when signing the petition. After completely filling out and signing it, mail the original petition back to the address at the bottom of the petition.

If you need additional copies of the petition, just download and print out multiple copies of the petition and the circulating instructions while at Florida4Marriage.org. Be sure to get your family, friends, fellow church members and even your coworkers to sign a petition as well and return those to the address on the bottom of the petition as soon as possible.

Florida4Marriage.org needs to collect just under half a million petitions by December 31, 2005. As you can see, this is a tremendous task, and they need your help to get the job done – so download and sign a marriage amendment petition today.

I predict the amendment will get the signatures, and it will pass. The only question is, will it bring out more Republicans than the chance to elect a Democratic governor (or to keep Katherine Harris out of Bill Nelson's chair) brings out Democrats. Remains to be seen, and Florida seems strangely impervious to the anti-Bush fever sweeping much of the country (possibly because the president's brother remains persistently popular here...)
