A new TIME poll confirms what we already know (and what even the Clintons must know deep down inside) -- Barack Obama is more electable than Hillary Clinton, if the Republican candidate is John McCain...
First, the horse race:
Democratic preference (2/1-4): Clinton - 48% Neither - 3 Unsure - 6
Now, the cross-party match-up (2/1-4):
Clinton - 46% McCain - 46 Other - 2 Neither - 2 Unsure - 4
Obama - 48% McCain - 41 Other - 2 Neither - 3 Unsure - 6
A February 1-3 CNN poll shows much the same thing, with Clinton edging out the Senator from Arizona, but Obama beating him handily:
Clinton - 50% McCain - 47 Other - 2 Neither - -- Unsure - --
Obama - 52% McCain - 44 Other - 3 Neither - 1 Unsure - 1
The difference in both polls, is that Obama does better with Independents (Pew gives him a 62 percent approval rating with them, higher than any candidate including McCain) -- takes them from McCain along with soft Republicans (now called Obamacans by the punditocracy,) whereas Hillary will have to rely on the Democratic base, mainly white women and Hispanics, to win the election.Labels: 2008 election, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, polls, presidential candidates |
