The “dirty dozen” Democrats who blocked Dick Durbin’s bankruptcy “cramdown” legislation will, no doubt, rear their ugly heads again when healthcare reform comes up for debate in the Senate. Chief among the bad guys, besides Benedict Arlen Specter, who let’s face it, can’t be counted on by either party, is Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, who not only has no use for homeowners when he can get so much money from big banks, he also has no interest in reforming healthcare if it involves the option of a public plan. Per ThinkProgress:

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE), whose biggest campaign donor is the insurance industry, said he’s not interested in a public option. HuffPost reports why:

Nelson’s problem, he told CQ, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans. “At the end of the day, the public plan wins the game,” Nelson said. Including a public option in a health plan, he said, was a “deal breaker.”

Why so hard hearted, Ben? Could it be that your biggest contributors include insurance companies? Per, we find that over the years, Nelson’s campaign kitty has been significantly fattened by the industries he’s protecting now:

Nelson, Bayh, and Baucus still feel safe siding with the circus clowns. Look at them! The Republican Party is nothing more than a freak show. The tan fellow from sunny Ohio Boehner and soporific Mitch McConell. Take the man’s pulse, he may have passed away a couple of years ago. Opie from South Carolina Lindsey Graham and his backwater governor, Mark Sanford, who actually thought he could get away with refusing stimulus money. Letterman pegged Rush, “an Eastern European gangster”, and O’Riley, “a goon”. He hasn’t even bothered to mention the weepy confused fascist Glenn Beck.

A good part of the Bush Administration will soon be confined to life within the borders of the US. Outside the country they will be subject to arrest for war crimes and torture. They’ll need to pray that Obama and Holder never grow a spine and make them wanted here too.

The Republicans will go the way of the Whigs. They will never again be a viable contender in national elections. They will devolve into a Southern-based white supremacist splinter group.

I agree with your assessment of the GOP, at least for the foreseeable future, though 20 years from now, they may be a completely different party (if not, they will indeed be Whigs.) But that leaves a big question: if the Democrats become the de facto lone party, what’s to stop the conservatives in the party from preventing all meaningful change? It’s something progressives need to start thinking about.
