The Birther-Buster Bill

July 28, 2009 · Posted in News and Current Affairs, Political News

Now THIS, is how Democrats should behave. The party of wimps, compromisers and a handful of real men (Nancy Pelosi included) finally passed a bill ont he floor of the House that played hardball with the GOP. The Bill, House Resolution 593, proposed by Rep. Neil Abercrombie, (D-Hawaii), seems harmless enough: “Recognizing and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the entry of Hawaii into the Union as the 50th State.” But it also does something else. Per the Huffpo:

… as part of the 456-word resolution, Abercrombie is including the following line: “Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii…”

In no short order, H.R. 593 has become what one Democratic operative described as the “counter-birther” bill.

As was pointed out in the Salon war room: Republicans facing this vote were damned if they “ayed” and damned if they “nayed”:

If Republicans don’t reject the conspiracy theories about President Obama’s birthplace outright, their opponents can use it to paint them as extremists; if they do reject them, they might have a problem with their base.

Well, the resolution passed unanimously, on a voice vote. Even crazy Michelle Bachman, who tried to block the vote on the House floor, didn’t have the guts to vote no.  Oh, and somebody hold down Crazzy Eileen. Mike Castle voted for it, too. And so did the Pride of Florida himself, “Birther Bill” Posey. Of course, this being the Democrats, the bill wasn’t crafted to stick it to the GOP. It was introduced last month, and the fact that it pings birther Republicans is strictly coincidental. But it sure is funny. Check the roll call here.
