11-year-old Malia Obama was targeted with vile comments by right wing "FReepers."

The Free Republic has long been a hot spot for the dregs of right wing world. I know, because I infiltrated it three times a few years ago, just to see what the natives were saying. What I found out is that as a FReeper, you fit in fine, so long as you praised President Bush, supported the Iraq war, and generally frowned on brown people, MSNBC and for some reason, CNN’s Aaron Brown… One false move, though — like criticizing Mr. Bush, or expressing doubt on the war, or on domestic surveilance — and the moderators banned you quick, fast and in a hurry. Not so, when you post racist slimebag vitriol against the pre-teen daughter of the African-American president of the United States … (After all … they’re negroes…!)

From the Vancouver Sun:

“A typical street whore.” “A bunch of ghetto thugs.” “Ghetto street trash.” “Wonder when she will get her first abortion.”

These are a small selection of some of the racially-charged comments posted to the conservative ‘Free Republic’ blog Thursday, aimed at U.S. President Barack Obama’s 11-year-old daughter Malia after she was photographed wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on the front.

The thread was accompanied by a photo of Michelle Obama speaking to Malia that featured the caption, “To entertain her daughter, Michelle Obama loves to make monkey sounds.”

Though this may sound like the sort of thing one might read on an Aryan Nation or white power website, they actually appeared on what is commonly considered one of the prime online locations for U.S. Conservative grassroots political discussion and organizing – and for a short time, the comments seemed to have the okay of site administrators.

Moderators of the blog left the comments – and commenters – in place until a complaint was lodged by a writer doing research on the conservative movement, almost a full day later.

Haven’t had enough? Here’s a sampling of the FReeper literary masterpieces, by Tarpon:

And of course, this little gem, from someone who calls himself U.S. Navy Vet, but who like his friends, lacks the courage to use his or her own name…

Fancy, no? The thread was pulled, due to the complaint publicity, after the Sun reporter, Chris Parry, inquired about its content. And then it was restored, and then finally pulled again. The site helpfully (albeit temporarily) posted a disclaimer, which included this helpful bit of information:

Free Republic is a site dedicated to the concerns of traditional grassroots conservative activists. We’re here to discuss and advance our conservative causes in a more or less liberal-free environment. We’re not here to debate liberals. We do not want our pages filled with their arrogant, obnoxious, repugnant bile. Liberals, usurpers, and other assorted malcontents are considered unwelcome trolls on FR and their accounts and or posts will be summarily dismissed at the convenience of the site administrators.

Free Republic does not advocate or condone racism, violence, rebellion, secession, or an overthrow of the government.

Yes, dismiss the vile liberals, and their peace sign wearing whore preteen children, too…! (ahem) The conservative movement of course immediately rose up to decry the profane insults against a little girl, just like they did when David Letterman made a joke about Sarah Palin’s teenaged daughter being impregnated  by a man … as if Sarah Palin’s teenaged daughter would EVER stoop to getting pregna… wait a minute!!!!

No, what they did, was to attack the reporter.

NewsBusters, which purports to be a right wing Media Matters, only without the facts and stuff, took its best shot, most succinctly summarized as: “everybody in the blogosphere does it! … Nyah nyah nyah Daily Kos!!!” And then the crack NB staff deduced that Parry, the writer who discovered the vile posts must have planted them!!!

*****Update II: Maybe before Shuster goes any further with this, he might want to investigate the Vancouver Sun writer’s possible connection to Daily Kos (h/t NBer carolina09).

“HollywoodOz” has written some pretty vile stuff at DailyKos during his tenure. These included playing a mnemonics game wherein “BUSH” was “Bloody Useless Sack Of Hatred” and CHENEY was “Can He Eat Negro Eyes Yet.”

He’s also fond of creating Google bombs, including one in 2005 to make Bill O’Reilly look like a terrorist sympathizer.

What’s the connection to the Sun’s Chris Parry? Well, Moxie Online has a member named HollywoodOz, real name Chris Parry. Technorati also shows HollywoodOz as Chris Parry.

Beyond this, a man simply calling himself Oz runs a blog called Notes From the Nat which follows baseball, in particular the Vancouver Canadians. In 2006, a fan sent in an e-mail message wherein Oz was referred to as “the wizard of HollywoodOz, Chris Parry.”

Finally, DKos’s HollywoodOz often cites Vancouver newspapers and other Canadian media as he did here, here, and here.

Is this all a coincidence?

And of course, the every-ready tool known in the Internet world as “Gawker,” was there to facilitate. Well that solves it! And the FReepers rejoiced!!! Except for one … small … problem. Cue Mr. Destructo!

Despite the best attempts of members of FreeRepublic to whitewash their conduct, the fact is that the users making the worst comments are, and have been for some time, frequent posters on the forums. Apparently, these “liberal plants” — as they are quick to label any members whose posts are examined by any media — have had accounts dating back to 2000, and have fit in undetected. They evidently assimilate so fully in the hopes that, one day, they could hope to pass fully as FreeRepublic members and only, if pressed on their credentials, betray themselves by being almost exactly like FreeRepublic members. Their perfidy lies, one imagines, in being almost completely identical. Which obviously poses a problem: what “outs” someone accused of racism, homophobia or sexism if they blended in flawlessly before? Which hatred were they not full up on, in their weekly pamphlets?

Indeed, Patriot08 (who thinks the president is a “Muslim usurper” whom he in tooootally non-racist fashion calls “Obongo,”  and Tarpon, and U.S. Navy Vet and Manc, who has greatest hits like this one:

Homo perverts used to lurk in public toilets. Now they run our public schools.

… are all FReeper regulars, not usurpers or trolls. Unless they’re really, really skilled trolls with incredibly long-range thinking … Just ask U.S. Navy Vet if he’s a troll, something he addressed in a series of posts, none of which expressed a whit of regret over calling an 11-year-old girl a “street whore”:

I didn’t mean for you to get dragged into a PMSNBC fight over my comment. If’n you want to give them my name and I would be HAPPY to get on their “network”.

“If’n????” Jesus, is EVERYONE in the Republican Party a hillbilly??? Thankfully, the spirit of the Free Republic lives on, in insightful posts like: an entire thread about creative ues of the word “uppity” … and these comments from a thread about U.S. aid to Africa:

I’m thinking The One might be open to a bit of reparation

No, not racist in the slightest … Silly FReepers. The Internet is for grownups.

****UPDATE: For the love of God … O’Reilly gets one right … sort of … (and Harold Ford Jr. is finally home…)

Meanwhile: decoding the wingers: they hate the peace sign … it just pisses them off. Wow, imagine what a job the FReepers would have done on that beatnik hippie, Jesus (“blessed are the peacemakers is for Democrat sissies!!!)
