Wouldn’t it have been easier to just leave town?

charlie-leaping1…. Charlie Crist is still taking flak over his “I had no idea Obama was in Florida” fib. Apparently, there’s this thing called a “public records search…”

A detailed itinerary and invitation was provided by the White House on Oct. 23, three days before the visit, and Crist’s executive assistant wrote back the same day saying, “Unfortunately, the governor will be unable to attend.”

In ordinary times, Crist’s claim may have drawn puzzled looks for a day or two. Obama’s visit was widely previewed in the news and the governor is a regular reader. …

E-mails obtained by the St. Petersburg Times this week through a public records request cast doubt on that claim. The messages prove Crist’s office was aware of the visit, and it seems unlikely his aide would have dismissed Crist going to Jacksonville without checking with Crist.

Uh-oh. Meanwhile, Crist has responded to his recent string of very bad press, by firing his communications director, and he’s taken to reaching out to reporters himself, and setting up his own interviews (I await my text containing that cell number, Charles…) Next week? Governor Crist buys every Floridian an ice cream. Two scoops if you’re a registered Republican likely to vote in next year’s primary!

(UPDATE: the governor’s office has announced that there will be no ice creams for registered Democrats in Florida, and the governor denies any knowledge of the existence of ice cream in the Sunshine State. And even if ice cream does exist in Florida, it didn’t give him any campaign contributions, any of which he does discover, will be promptly returned.)

BTW, one columnist has suggested a few excuses that might help the governor undo that infamous hug:

Crist just needs to say that he was going rogue that day, conducting his own “Operation Undercover Patriot.”

It wasn’t a hug. It was merely a clever way to get close enough to the president to pick his pocket, in hopes that Obama carried his “real” birth certificate — the one from Kenya.

Or he could stand up to the crazies, and remind them that Florida really, really needed the money. The columnist did offer one addition to that advice that would be most unhelpful for this particular governor:

“I was after a package that day, but it had nothing to do with the stimulus,” Crist could say.

No, I don’t think our Miss Charlie will be going there… He doesn’t want to lose the evangelicals, too…

Meanwhile, St. Petersblog posts more serious advice for Charlie — which involves embracing new media, and getting serious about governing. … Nah, I say go with the “birther” thing … minus “the package…”
