“I basically don’t”

December 1, 2009 · Posted in Afghanistan, People, Politics

73954997MW001_Vice_PresidenDraft dodging former vice president, would-be war criminal and Jon Meacham dream 2012 candidate Dick Cheney’s three-word answer to whether the Bush-Cheney failed presidency bears any responsibility for the mess in Afghanistan. The follow up question? There was none. Oh, and he accused President Obama of “projecting weakness” again. God, he misses the torture…

UPDATE: Politico’s Arena cues the backlash. Let’s just pick two, starting with a war hawk:

Michael O’Hanlon
Senior fellow in Foreign Policy, Brookings Institution :

Mr. Cheney needs to be more patriotic. We have one president at a time—and this president is doing what the Bush administration was belatedly beginning to do itself on Afghanistan. In fact Obama is doing it far more decisively and vigorously and assertively. The wavering occurred over the last 7 years, not now. Former top leaders of the nation need to try to respect each other and rise a bit above the partisan fray, especially on matters of national security, especially when they fundamentally agree with the policy of their successors. This reflects such poor judgment by Cheney that even after all these years of watching him get more bitter and nasty I am still surprised.

And one more, that properly sums things up:

Stephen M. Walt
Professor of International Affairs, Harvard :

. . .have you, at long last, no shred of decency left?”

Oh, never mind. Silly question.

UPDATE: Republicans wish Dick would just STFU.
