The Rubiolution will be televised

March 10, 2010 · Posted in Advertising, Elections, Florida, Marco Rubio, People, Politics

March sure is early to be going on television for a primary in August … which tells me Team Rubio is at least somewhat concerned that AMEXgate and the $134 back wax might begin to stick. Here’s their attempt to interrupt the narrative, with a gauzy biographical ad that contains a curious message at a time when voters want Washington to work together, rather than fight like fish wives: “we need Republicans in Washington who will stand up to Barack Obama, not join him…” as if Obama is the king of the pod people. The message is aimed squarely at the Obama deranged GOP primary voters Rubio is already wildly popular with (note the paean to “defeating radical islam,”) and hits most of the requisite winger notes. Really, all that’s missing is a guest shot of Tom Tancredo and some drivel about a border fence. Watch:

Team Crist’s response after the jump.

The Crist folks won’t discuss whether they plan to respond in kind, and no word yet on how big the Rubio buy is (CNN reports it will run “on the Fox News Channel” and in unspecified parts of Florida,) but here’s the official Team Crist response:

“As the truth begins to surface about Speaker Rubio’s double billing of taxpayers, lavish spending of Republican money, and, just today, excessive pork spending, no ad will be able to stop voters from seeing he is not who he claims to be. A Miami lobbyist, Speaker Rubio has proved he is just another typical politician who uses his public office for personal gain and only comes clean once caught. Floridians deserve a true steward of their hard earned taxpayer dollars and public servant who does the right thing, even when no one is looking.” –Andrea Saul, Communications Director, Charlie Crist for U.S. Senate
