The twisted world of Liz Cheney

Several profiles, including this long one in the New Yorker, paint a picture of nepotism, merit-free career rides, almost pathological daddy worship and an increasingly twisted sense of reality, all wrapped up in one petite mother of five and “gutter McCarthy,” whom the extremist neocons on the right would dearly love to see as a United States Senator, or even as president. Meanwhile, the Cheney family legacy, waterboarding, is described in grisly detail in internal CIA documents, via Salon. A few chilling details:

Interrogators pumped detainees full of so much water that the CIA turned to a special saline solution to minimize the risk of death, the documents show. The agency used a gurney “specially designed” to tilt backwards at a perfect angle to maximize the water entering the prisoner’s nose and mouth, intensifying the sense of choking – and to be lifted upright quickly in the event that a prisoner stopped breathing.

The documents also lay out, in chilling detail, exactly what should occur in each two-hour waterboarding “session.” Interrogators were instructed to start pouring water right after a detainee exhaled, to ensure he inhaled water, not air, in his next breath. They could use their hands to “dam the runoff” and prevent water from spilling out of a detainee’s mouth. They were allowed six separate 40-second “applications” of liquid in each two-hour session – and could dump water over a detainee’s nose and mouth for a total of 12 minutes a day. Finally, to keep detainees alive even if they inhaled their own vomit during a session – a not-uncommon side effect of waterboarding – the prisoners were kept on a liquid diet. The agency recommended Ensure Plus…

Welcome to the Cheney’s America. Other details from the New Yorker piece: guess who some of Liz Cheney’s pals are? Most won’t surprise you, but this passage tells you most of what you need to understand about the incestuous relationship between the politically powerful and the mainstream media, including the supposedly “liberal” Washington/New York press axis:

Liberal critics have been outraged that the TV networks give the Cheneys so much on-air real estate for their crusade. Fox is a regular pulpit, of course, but Liz is also all over NBC, where she happens to be social friends with Meet the Press host David Gregory (whose wife worked with Liz ’s husband at the law firm Latham & Watkins), family friends with Justice Department reporter Pete Williams (Dick Cheney’s press aide when he was secretary of Defense), and neighborhood friends with Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski, daughter of Carter-administration national-security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski. When Mika criticized Dick Cheney on her show last year, the former vice-president sent her a box of chocolate cupcakes.

And the New Yorker confirms that it’s Liz who is her father’s conduit to his “favorite online media outlet,” Politico.

  1. I guess we are never going to see anyone brought forward with criminal charges for waterboarding, huh? Just sad.

  2. DavidB says:

Thank God for VP Cheney and his patriotic daughter Liz. I hope Liz is able to follow in her father’s footsteps.
