Morning clicks: free Charlie … Rubio racks up establishment support … Height passes on
As we pause to remember Dr. Dorothy Height, the women’s and civil rights pioneer who passed away overnight, at the ripe old age of 98, let’s see what’s going on in the world she left behind … (President’s statement at the end of the post)
BTW, if you missed the outstanding MSNBC special on Timothy McVeigh last night, you should try to catch it online. It was chilling, particularly how much McVeigh’s rhetoric sounds like certain people out there screeching about the Second Amendment, a “Marxist” “foreigner” in the White House and “gangster government” today …
In Florida, Charlie Crist has begun the complicated process of liberating himself from his party, while Marco Rubio continues to pile on the endorsements of Republican officialdom. Today, Eric Cantor joins the Rubio parade. As Adam Smith points out, Marco Rubio is now the establishment candidate, and Crist is the outsider. (To which GOP consultant Phil Vangelakos asks this very good question…)
Not for nothing, but if Charlie goes just by the comments on this thread, he’s got to run indie … The Facebook picture is a bit more mixed, but still a good look for independence …
BTW, does El Unico know that one of his new insider friends, Mitt Romney, would have taken the stimulus money, just like Charlie Crist did, if he had still been governor of Massachusetts? And for a glimpse into the new, insider-y Rubio, catch this contorted explanation of how Romneycare good, Obamacare bad …
Meanwhile, the pressure on Crist from Republicans continues to mount, as a party that frankly, hasn’t been terribly loyal to him ratchets up their demands that the governor be loyal to the party …
Over to the governor’s race, where Alex Sink is hoping to build on the momentum from that Quinnipiac poll yesterday showing a closer race by talking up her economic plan. Sink was on the trail yesterday in Tampa.
Bill McCollum, meanwhile, gets the dubious distinction of becoming the Stormfront candidate … the white supremacist crowd likes McCollum’s opposition to the MLK holiday.
And proof that Republicans in Tallahassee are getting overreach-o-phobia in the wake of the SB6 backlash: a bill to expand parental notification of abortion has been deep sixed by its own sponsor, prompting an angry retort from the Christian Family Coalition, which essentially called Republican State Sen. Andy Gardiner a coward.
BTW, can you be a credible CFO candidate if the bank you oversaw business operations for failed?
Mediaite self-corrects after jumping the gun on the “RightNetwork.”
Greg Sargent has lots of stuff in the Morning Plum about Democrats’ maneuvering on financial reg reform today, better known as “Wall Street reform” if Dems are smart about it. The upshot being this nifty new ad from the DNC:
And now, for the most disingenuous piece of video I’ve ever seen … EVER.
UPDATE: Here’s the statement from the POTUS on Dorothy Height’s passing:
Michelle and I were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dorothy Height – the godmother of the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to so many Americans. Ever since she was denied entrance to college because the incoming class had already met its quota of two African American women, Dr. Height devoted her life to those struggling for equality. She led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years, and served as the only woman at the highest level of the Civil Rights Movement – witnessing every march and milestone along the way. And even in the final weeks of her life – a time when anyone else would have enjoyed their well-earned rest – Dr. Height continued her fight to make our nation a more open and inclusive place for people of every race, gender, background and faith. Michelle and I offer our condolences to all those who knew and loved Dr. Height – and all those whose lives she touched.
