What a difference a year makes. A year ago, Jim Greer was fending off charges that he spent too much money as party chairman, and deflecting attention with one hell of a stunt: accusing President Obama of trying to indoctrinate school children with his nefarious back-to-school speech. Lots of low-information parents took up the alarm (including at one of my children’s schools) and demanded that the president’s speech not be shown. Greer made an ass of himself, and most kids watched the speech without incident. One year on, Greer is under indictment for fraud and money laundering, his party has kicked him to the curb (along with the guy who appointed him, Gov. Charlie Crist,) and they’re pretending they weren’t down with all the dirt he did as chairman, even though it’s pretty much public record that they were. And Greer? He’s had a little change of heart regarding the president…
And oh, what a change it is.
From the Herald: Jim Greer’s apology to the president, and what he thinks about his party today:
“In the year since I issued a prepared statement regarding President Obama speaking to the nation’s schoolchildren, I have learned a great deal about the party I so deeply loved and served,” Greer said in a written statement. “Unfortunately, I found that many within the GOP have racist views and I apologize to the President for my opposition to his speech last year and my efforts to placate the extremists who dominate our party today. My children and I look forward to the president’s speech.”
The speech takes place tomorrow. Let’s see how the crazies react. BTW it should be noted that Jim Greer has a reason to be so keen to talk about race. He happens to have been a main driver behind Michael Steele, whom Greer first sought to run against for RNC chairman, only to step aside because well, everybody hates Jim Greer. Greer then backed Steele for the job. And the two led parallel lives — living it up on party donations while their respective committees bled into the red. Small world.
