The man who would have been right wing shock jock Joyce Kaufman’s boss in Washington, newly minted Congressman-elect Allen West, issued a sober statement in response to her withdrawing as his chief of staff Thursday … and then he went on the radio …
Letting his bandanna down, as it were, the biker mag columnist, ex-military mock executioner and musket musterer chosen to lead a District that includes toney Palm Beach, ripped the people he thinks brought Joyce down. From Naked Politics:
The incoming congressman just called into Joyce Kaufman’s radio show and told her while she’s taking on the left in South Florida, he’II “fight them on the battle field in Washington DC.
“I’m even more commited, even more focused on making sure that this liberal, progressive, socialist agenda, this leftwing vile, vicious, despicable machine that is out there is soundly brought to its knees,” he said.
Kaufman pushed back against depictions of her as a gun crazy nut. After suggesting she wants to “exterminate” the left, she laughed and said, “I mean that in a pest control way…in a humane way, trap them and release them in their homes.
“I’m really nice, sweet tempered,” she said. “Sometimes I get a little ballistic, but I don’t want to hurt anybody, I just want to see my country go back to what it was.”
Well that doesn’t explain at all why one of Joyce’s devotees would threaten to start shooting up schools and public buildings…
Later, appearing on Lou Dobbs’ show on the same station, Joyce used the national platform to name the enemy:
“There’s a lot of hyperbole in what we do,” Kaufman said. “People are not going to sit around and listen to us talk about gardening unless we’re on NPR.”
She told Dobbs her use of language “may go over the top,” but that MSNBC “doctored up a videotape and ran it on an endless loop.”
He sounded a bit floored by Kaufman likening House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to “garbage.
“I know Joyce you care deeply about the country, about Allen West and I know you’ve got to feel great pain that in any way the attack had to reach him,” he said.
Of course, Kaufman is getting all the attention, which as WFTL’s former lone non-right wing nutter host, journalist Jim Defede points out, is what she really, really wants. But the media shouldn’t stop paying attention to Allen West. Because Allen West … wait for it … is at least as crazy as Joyce Kaufman. And per people who know them both? He’s the one who really, really means it.
During the campaign, the Ron Klein folks tried (and clearly failed) to point this out. They put up a site called The Real Allen West, that’s still useful. On it, you’ll find things like:
Allen West likening President Obama to Adolf Hitler, and telling a very tiny tea party crowd they need to take up arms to fight the federal government:
“In 1930 there was a gentleman in Germany who took away private gun ownership, and you know what happened to that population.” Following his characterization of Hitler as a gentleman, West said, “You must be well-informed and well-armed because this government that we have now is a tyrannical government.”
Allen West comparing the media to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, and saying the “mainstream media’s “is no longer reporting the news, they are propagandizing and I think that is another dangerous situation that we find developing in the United States of America… Goebbels is doing summersaults and back flips in his grave.”
Allen West saying liberals want soldiers to die:
“Remember the thing that they don’t like about me, on two points. The first point is that I prevented US soldiers from losing their lives which meant that they would not be able to be put in their newspapers and talk about how terrible war is.” [Allen West on Blog Talk Radio, 8/3/10]
Allen West freaking out over “co-exist” bumper stickers:
And of course, the classic: Allen West telling his supporters that the way to beat Klein was to “make him scared to come out of his home…” and the way to fight the Obama administration (President Obama is from Chicago) is the “Chicago way” — meaning “send them to the morgue…”
Allen West has repeatedly used language encouraging physical intimidation by his supporters. He said, ‘You’ve got to make the fellow scared to come out of his house.’” On March 27, 2010, West was speaking at a Fort Lauderdale Tea Party event. West said, “Because the whole point is that, that’s a thugary. You have in Washington D.C. right now. And if you understand Chicago. How many people remember that movie the Untouchables. Remember when Sean Connery said with Kevin Costner in that move, in that church, you got to understand the Chicago way. And if you understand the Chicago way, you got to understand how far are you willing to go. Because if they send one of yours to the hospital, you got to send two of yours to the morgue.”
West Encouraged Using Scare Tactics.
Speaking to conservative activists, West told them they had to “…make the fellow scared to come out of his house.” [Palm Beach Post, 4/11/10]
So don’t get too distracted by Joyce. She’s just the loudmouth on the radio inciting crazy people to shoot up schools. Allen West is the guy going to Washington who you’ve got to worry about doing some actual shooting…
Meanwhile, the Hispanic group Somos Republicans tells TRR they never got a response to their open letter asking West not to hire Kaufman, but they did issue this statement Thursday, praising West for not hiring her. Of course, since she resigned, and he didn’t make the decision not to hire her, it’s a bit unclear what they’re thanking him for. TRR has asked for comment from the group on that score.
