Think you’ve seen it all in politics? Sure, there was the “demon sheep,” and the “gather your muskets” tea party guy, but there were small change compared to the latest web offering from a PAC calling itself Turn Right USA (or “Right Turn USA” on Youtube.) And what they’ve “turned” is the corner on racism and sexism in online advertising.
The ad is an attack on Democratic Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who is running against tea party Republican Craig Huey for Jane Harman’s vacated congressional seat in California’s 36th district in a special election July 12th. The ad is so vile, Emily’s List sent out an email alert about it this morning but wouldn’t link to it. In the Youtube ad, a white pole dancer is depicted, with Hahn’s face superimposed on the body.
The rest of the “ad” features a couple of rollicking buffoon black actors portraying “gangsta” rappers, in an effort to portray Hahn as soft on the gang set, with the underlying “black thugs mobbing the white stripper” confabulation thrown in for good measure. The point, apparently, is to attack Hahn for a program she started to put gang members to work, which… you know what? It doesn’t even matter what the underlying issue is supposed to be because the ad is so rank. Have a look for yourself:
Turn Right USA claims on its rudimentary WordPress site that it is a “super PAC” whose purpose is:
to execute Independent Expenditure campaigns by a group of American citizens who are:
unrepresented by the political class of this Country;
nauseated by the laughable stupidity of professional politicians;
outraged by their liberal benefactors like George Soros, and
angered that their opposition is too cowardly to fight back!
Turn Right USA’s mission is to expose and lampoon the typical politico’s microscopic brain through cutting-edge viral videos with guts and humor!
So apparently, they’d like to replace “nauseatingly stupid” politicians with racist 6th graders, like themselves.
The video directs the curious to a novel webiste, Hahnshomeboyz.org, which features a convenient Fox News hit-job on Hahn. See how that works?
So far, Turn Right is getting what they wanted. The Youtube ad is quickly going viral, with over 65,000 hits at last check, and the story about the ad has gone global, with condemnations stretching clear across the pond. Per the Daily Mail:
Jennifer Crider, deputy executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told the Huffington Post: ‘This ad does not reflect the values of California’s hardworking women and men.
‘Craig Huey’s silence should send a chilling message to our mothers sisters, and daughters that this kind of outrageous and sexist material is tolerated.’
TPM reported that the ad was produced by Ladd Ehlinger, Jr., who made a splash in 2010 with a bit for Alabama Agriculture Secretary candidate Dale Peterson.
Huey’s campaign did issue a statement saying the ad is “nappropriate, highly offensive and has no connection whatsoever to the Craig Huey campaign.”
Meanwhile, in right wing world, Tucker “execute Michael Vick” Carlson’s Daily Caller both condemns the ad, and declares it “hilarious!”
And Ehlinger defends the ad on his website, launching into a lather of fairly typical tea party blather about George Soros, and the fact that it’s Hahn who’s the real racist, and blah blah blah Breitbart body double.
What interesting times.
And in other racially insensitive conservative news, Fox Business Channel’s Eric Bolling is sorry for the stupid, faux-hip-hop slam on Obama, and who he has in the “hizzouse.” This after his juvenile racism is pointed out to him by a fellow white person.
UPDATE: A San Francisco Chronicle blogger tries to “understand” and reason with Ehlinger … on Twitter, where Ehlinger deploys all the usual Libertarian mumbo-jumbo about “not seeing race.” Jesus, be a brain cell.
