How out of touch is Mitt Romney?
He thinks Barack Obama is a modern-day Marie Antoinette who, unlike Mitt Romney, I presume, doesn’t care about the poor. Seriously.
Now I’m sure he had a plan in mind in saying that. But … well … Mitt Romney comparing Obama — the guy who was raised by a single mother and then by his grandparents, whose mom died haggling with health insurers and who experienced having his family live on food stamps when he was a kid and went to college on scholarship — he compared that guy, to Marie Antoinette, who inherited her wealth from the Austrian royal family and then married the king of France.
Mitt? I think we need to talk.
Let’s start with a 2008 CNN Money piece that compared the net worths of the various candidates for president. Let’s start with this one:
… and here’s another:
Read more of them, starting with John McCain, who in 2008 was about one fifth as rich as Willard Romney, who inherited a fortune from George Romney and then married a rich woman. … kind of like Marie Antoinette!
Now, neither of these guys is poor, by any stretch. But one of these people really did pull himself up from nothing. The other, not so much. And one of them believes (along with a whole lot of his fellow millionaires) that rich people like himself should contribute more to the economic recovery and the deficit, and the other says stuff like this:
“Even if we could afford the ever-expanding payments of an entitlement society, it is a fundamental corruption of the American spirit,” Romney said. “The battle we face today is more than a fight over our budget. It is a battle for America’s soul.”
Romney delivered a speech, complete with teleprompters, before more than 150 supporters inside the picturesque Bedford Town Hall. In his 13-minute address, Romney lamented the “invisible boot of government” that he warned would bring the country down. In Obama’s “entitlement society,” Romney said, “everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk.”
“Once we thought ‘entitlement’ meant that Americans were entitled to the privilege of trying to succeed in the greatest country in the world,” Romney said. “Americans fought and died to earn and protect that entitlement. But today the new entitlement battle is over the size of the check you get from Washington.”
Which sounds like it was written by David Koch, not to mention making absolutely no sense, because no one that Romney can name, including Obama, is calling for everyone to have the same “government check” and no initiative.
Since the 2008 campaign, Romney’s pockets have actually gotten fatter. Here’s his current situation: he is now worth upwards of $250 million, they recently put an addition on their $12 million California home, and his idea of a friendly bet is $10,000.
Maybe Romney thinks people will just naturally buy into him being “more like them” because he’s… tall? Wait … brunette? … I’m sure I’ll think of it eventually. Or maybe he thinks Obama looks like a trussed up French lady? Or maybe he’s just so completely out of touch with the ordinary world, he truly doesn’t understand that such a comparison is ironic, and not in a good way.
Of course, the response from the Dems was swift:
“It is actually laughable that the ‘Quarter-Billion-Dollar Man’ would call President Obama out of touch — and use the example of a French monarch to make the point,” DNC spokeswoman Melanie Roussell said in a statement to The Huffington Post on Thursday evening. “This is the same guy who joked that he was ‘unemployed,’ offered a $10,000 bet as casually as one might buy a cup of coffee, and said ‘corporations are people.’ He’s also the same person who, as a former corporate buyout specialist for Bain Capital, made his fortune firing thousands of workers, cutting benefits, bankrupting American companies and outsourcing jobs overseas. He’s the one who won’t release his tax returns — most likely because we would all learn that he pays a lower tax rate than middle class wage-earners. Laughable.”
Tightening the screws a bit, Obama campaign Press Secretary Ben LaBolt quickly followed suit, tweeting out a link to a video of Mitt Romney speaking French for an introduction of the volunteers at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
And if Romney chooses to later go the “Obama’s a Harvard elitist” route? Might be helpful for his campaign team to remind him that he holds both a Harvard Law degree and a Harvard MBA.
