Another meme bites the dust: shoe bomber vs. undiebomber

February 3, 2010 · Posted in Crime, National security · Comment

The shoe bomber was read his Miranda rights, too, it turns out … and the undiebomber IS cooperating with the FBI, not because he was waterboarded, righties, but because the professionals reached out to his family. Fancy that …

Roeder convicted of Tiller murder in just 37 minutes

Convicted murderer Scott Roeder

It was an open and shut case, and never hinged on whether or not Scott Roeder, 51, shot Dr. George Tiller in the head while the doctor was attending a church service, because he admitted that he did just that (and there was a church full of witnesses.) Instead:

Roeder even admitted that he had planned the killing. The defendant’s lawyers argued only that the criminal charge should be something short of murder– voluntary manslaughter, perhaps– because Roeder said that he had killed Tiller in order to save others– unborn children– from harm.

Clearly, Tiller posed no harm to “unborn children” as he sat in the pews of a Lutheran church, in addition to the fact that Tiller’s practice, providing abortion services, is legal, even in Kansas. Read more

Rev. Gaston Smith

A member of the Baptist Minister’s Council of Greater Miami & Vicinity confirmed to me this morning that Rev. Gaston Smith, recently convicted of third degree grand theft of grant money meant for his charitable organization (and this month’s “Faith Video On Demand Pastor of the Month,”) received a vote of confidence at the Council’s meeting yesterday, meaning he will stay on as president despite his legal troubles. The vote was unanimous. Read more

Burned teen goes home for Christmas

Michael Brewer, the teenager who was set on fire by a group of classmates earlier this year, has gone home from the hospital:

Andre signs off (involuntarily)

For Andre Eggelletion, this has got to be the unkindest cut of all:

FORT LAUDERDALE – Days after the South Florida Times reported that prosecutors are investigating former Broward County Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion’s brother in an ongoing bribery probe, the radio talk show host’s program went off the air. Andre Eggelletion was host of The Andre Eggelletion Show, which aired Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on News-Talk 850, WFTL in Fort Lauderdale for just over two years. Read more

Even more than his big brother, my former co-host Andre is a crier. So if this thing goes much further, there will be tears. From inimitable reporter Elgin Jones, bain of sketchy politicians (and their kin) everywhere:

[South Florida Times] State prosecutors are investigating to determine if local radio talk show host Andre Eggelletion may have accepted money on behalf of his brother from companies that had business before the county commission, according to sources. Prosecutors are seeking to determine what work Andre Eggelletion’s National Jingle Company performed for Prestige Homes of South Florida, Inc., and whether any of the money from the developer went to Josephus Eggelletion, possibly as a concealed bribe, sources said.

Bumbaclot! Buju Banton arrested on drug charges

December 13, 2009 · Posted in Crime, Entertainment News, People · 3 Comments

Buju+Banton

(and not that drug, either.) From the Miami Herald, proof that some controversies never die:

Buju Banton, the Jamaican reggae star whose anti-gay lyrics have drawn international criticism, is in a federal lockup in Miami, facing drug conspiracy charges.

Drug Enforcement Administration agents say Banton, real name Mark Anthony Myrie, has been in custody since Thursday and will soon be transferred to Tampa, where the U.S. Attorney is charging him with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilos of cocaine.

Banton has homes both in Jamaica and Tamarac.

While legions of dancehall reggae enthusiasts view Banton as one of the most prolific voices of Jamaica’s poor masses, critics say he’s a gay basher whose lyrics incite violence by calling for attacking and torturing homosexuals. His song Boom Bye Bye, a dance-hall hit released in the 1990s, advocates shooting gays in the head and setting them on fire.

That’s drug arrest to anti-gay lyrics controversy in four paragraphs. And you thought this was a story about a drugs arrest … Read more

Will the Washington cop shooting be Huckabee’s Waterloo?

Mike Huckabee's controversial sentence commutation comes back to haunt.

Mike Huckabee's controversial sentence commutation comes back to haunt.

UPDATES with winger backlash after the jump.** Former Arkansas Gov. and current Fox News host Mike Huckabee has been downplaying the idea that he’ll run for president in 2012. And not a moment too soon. Turns out, the man wanted in connection with mowing down four police officers in a Seattle-area diner had his 35-year prison sentence commuted by the Huckster back in the day. From the Seattle Times:

Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing of four Lakewood police officers this morning, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

“This is the day I’ve been dreading for a long time,” Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas’ Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings. Read more

Teen expresses sympathy in torching of ‘friend’

November 25, 2009 · Posted in Crime · Comment

Jeremy Jarvis, the younger brother of Denver Colorado Jarvis (yes, that’s his real name) — one of three teenagers charged with attempted murder (as adults) in the torching of Michael Brewer, who was doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire as five boys surrounded him, has made his first public statement, expressing sympathy for the burned teen. (Contrary to the headlines, there was no actual apology.) Jeremy Jarvis who is just 13, has not yet been charged like his broth “DC,” aged 15, and two other teens, Matthew Bent, 15 and Jesus Mendez, 16. And he includes a shout out to his brother, along with “Mikey,” whom he called “one of his best friends” (a friend he allegedly watched being set on fire.) In the video below, Jarvis’ lawyer reveals that the seventh grader has been expelled from school due to his arrest, and is being home schooled. Watch:

By the way, Denver and Jeremy Jarvis’ mom previously apologized to the Brewer family, in the old fashioned sense of the word. Read more

Burning questions: since the Bush administration spying on us anyway, why didn’t they catch Nidal Hasan?

November 11, 2009 · Posted in Crime, Opinion · 1 Comment

hasan-uniformThe right is itching to blame the Fort Hood massacre on Barack Obama. They want to charge that in the politically-correct Age of O-quarious, even the United States Army is too timid to confront an openly-declared Islamist terrorist in their midst, or even to call him such by name. They are dying to say that Obama and his Pentagon should have been alerted by the Obama FBI about the threat that Nidal Hasan posed to his fellow soldiers. After all … hadn’t he had stated his Islamist views and been in contact al-Qaida…!!! …

… in 2007 and 2008 … When George W. Bush was still president. Read more
