Miami madness: ‘We Shall Overcome’ (the sequel)

**UPDATE 2: Spence-Jones is rumored to be preparing some sort of announcement this afternoon, pre-raly. Stay tuned…**
Today, hundreds of Black Miamians will take to the streets and march, to protest the decades of ineffective and corrupt government that has held back their neighborhoods, while some Black politicians — who were elected to bring hope and opportunity to their communities — lived high on the hog on the public dime, instead. …
No, I’m just playing. They’re marching in support of Michelle Spence-Jones. (As the Bossip folks would say: “Jesus, take the wheel…!”
The rally is supposed to take place at around 11:00 this morning 5 p.m. (the better to get a live shot on the evening news…) in front of the dismissed (for now) commissioner’s campaign office on 62nd Street in Miami’s District 5. Expect many choruses of “We Shall Overcome.” And yes, that sound you hear IS Dr. King rolling over in his grave.
UPDATE: the announcement for the rally (which Michelle posted on her Facebook page) calls on supporters to
*WEAR YOUR MICHELLE SPENCE-JONES CAMPAIGN T-SHIRT
… and it was sent out by the Spence-Jones campaign arm. No names of supporters or promoters of the event are listed…
Local buzz — Miami District 5: You’ve been punk’d

Well knock me over with a feather… Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones, having just cruised to re-election with Saddam Hussein=style margins on the strength of $180,000 in developer-related campaign cash and a lot of boxed chicken dinners at the senior centers — and after fewer than 10 percent of the 40,000 voters in District 5 (which a colleague of mine has dubbed “Zombietown”) bothered to show up at the polls — is alleged to be under investigation … again. Surprise!
IN OTHER LOCAL BUZZ: Miami police chief John Timoney quits — new mayor wants chief “promoted from within.”
