Learning to love Little Green Footballs

lgf-main-logoThe publisher of LGF and co-founder of Pajamas Media, who has been pissing off wingers for some time now with his maddeningly reasonable take on things like the birthers and evolution, finally quits the conservative movement. Welcome back from the dark side, Mr. Johnson. More on the political divorce here.

Curses! Drudged again!

drudgeIt’s been a long time since I’ve checked the Drudge Report — the onetime “unofficial assignment desk for America’s newsrooms” that ruled the Internet news link world what seems like ages ago. Lately, Drudge has been surpassed by other right wing voices, with Sarah Palin’s Facebook page doing to him what Glenn Beck has done to Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh (replace and outshine.) So when the Mattster comes up with a breaking news bombshell, it’s kind of newsworthy just that anyone’s paying attention. Especially when that bombshell is dead … wrong. From Poltico’s Micheal Calderone:

In another sign of detente between Fox and the White House, Major Garrett has landed an interview with President Obama, according to the Drudge Report. It will take place next week in China.

Drudge wrote: “Obama Grants FOXNEWS Interview, DRUDGE has learned; Major Garrett will conduct interview in China next week …”

That would be quite a reversal from the war of words between the Obama administration and Fox just a few weeks ago.

UPDATE: A White House official tells POLITICO that the report is “not accurate.” “We’ve not committed to doing any presidential interviews during the trip to Asia with any outlets at this point,” the official said.

Too bad Calderone didn’t score a screen grab. Drudge has since deep sixed the headline — wiping it from the memory hole altogether (not even a little link left.) Oh well. Apparently, TVNewser fell for the phony scoop, too.

The FPC fights back against the cynicism

October 12, 2009 · Posted in Blogging, Florida · 6 Comments

My commentary on Kendrick Meek’s blockbuster sweep of the Florida Netroots Awards prompts a lively back an forth over at the FPC blog. Said Dave Harper (the guy who actually helped me out during “the spam attack,” (my bad, I thought it was Kenneth) feels that I may have been a bit too cynical and snarky about the liberal blogging phenom that is Kendrick Meek:

I respect the right of the authors to air their opinions, but I find that their commentary is a bit cynical. Yes, Kenneth Quinnell works for Kendrick Meek, who won an unprecedented number of the awards this year, but that doesn’t impugn the validity of those awards. Meek won the majority of votes, for whatever reason, and Kenneth didn’t do anything nefarious to ensure that.

First of all, I didn’t imply that he did “do anything nefarious to ensure” Kendrick won. As far as I’m concerned, Kenneth Quinnell is doing his job, and a good job at that. Kendrick’s site looks 100 percent better, and apparently, every so often, he or his ghost poster even blogs… Read more

How to win the Florida ‘netroots’

October 11, 2009 · Posted in Blogging, Florida · 2 Comments

Kendrick MeekHow do you get nominated for five “netroots” awards when before this year, you have never actually been associated with the “netroots?” How do you get to be the best Twitter user in the bunch when as this blogger points out, you only managed to “tweet” five times in a month? And how does a guy who was on the wrong side (also known as the Diaz Balart side...) of net neutrality suddenly become the “netroots candidate of the year” (beating a guy who was simultaneously inducted intop the “progressive hall of fame”) … and the darling of liberal Florida bloggers everywhere? Simple: hire Kenneth Quinnell. Read more

Erick Ericksen outs himself, fellow wingers disintegrate over Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize

October 9, 2009 · Posted in Blogging, Opinion, Politics · Comment

The surprise announcement that President Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize sent wingers to the brink of mental breakdown, and one of the the first exploding heads out the gate was Erick (Von) Ericksen of RedState;com — the site that’s sort of a bus depot for former functionaries of the failed George W. Bush administration, where the prime directive is to wave their hands around frantically every time something happens that looks like a repudiation of the Bush era. The Nobel announcement — which clearly was, at least in part, a repudiation of the Bush era — fit the bill. And so Erick came out of the block with the following this morning:

I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota for it, but that is the only thing I can think of for this news. There is no way Barack Obama earned it in the nominations period.

So… racist much, Erick? Read more

Support the Report! 2009 Florida Netroots Awards voting is now open!

September 15, 2009 · Posted in Blogging · 6 Comments

Support your local ReidBlog! Voting is now open for the 2009 Florida Netroots Awards. The Reid Report is nominated in a couple of categories: best national blog, and best professional blog (I’m up against stiff competition in both categories, including the Florida for Obama campaign…)

As for recommendations, I voted for my boys at FLA Politics for best state blog, the good folks at SouthFloridaDailyBlog (who give me lots of link love) for best local blog; I went with my fellow Harvardian Dave Aronberg for best candidate site and netroots candidate of the year and Giancarlo Sopo for best new blogger (for Generation Miami.) I also supported Ken Quinnell for activist of the year, The Daily Sift, for best ongoing series, Fair Districts Florida for best online campaign, and for the Progressive Hall of Fame,I went with Kirk Wagar, because in my opinion he was one of the keys to Barack Obama winning Florida — he was in early, and stayed true to the end, (tough call there between him, Steve Schale, and Teddy Johnston.) I’m not as familiar with all the other entrants, and there are lots of other great candidates (Eric Jotkoff of the Florida Dems is one…) but definitely planning to check them all out.

Vote HERE (early and often!) Voting runs through September 29.

UPDATE: Okay, Floridians, don’t take me too seriously just because of the 2000 election — vote ONCE (and for me..) :) Also, I know I missed a bunch of shout-outs, one being Democracy for America (D4A) Miami. Big ups! Ditto for Beth Reinhard and the other bloggers at Naked Politics. Good luck to everyone who was nominated in all categories! :)
